How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts? FINAL EVALUATION

                  House style and theme
When creating my music video, magazine advert and digipak I ensured to make a recognisable ‘
house style’ so that the theme of the album will be easily identified by its target audience (13-21 year olds) in result working together to promote the album. The extended metaphor that runs through all my three products is the feeling of happiness and relief from getting away from a relationship which is reinforced within the lyrics of my song choice.

Music Video
My music video has the purpose to entertain its audience and also, to create a character that the fans of Taylor Swift can personally identify and relate to, therefore feeling relief and happiness when the video ends as she has forgotten and let go of her relationship. Not only did I want my audience to feel the way my actresses felt but I wanted them to be able to relate to the lyrics and be able to understand what she felt and why she felt it. Behind the song ‘we are never getting back together’ I wanted to amplify the lyrics and message by using a narrative and performance base. The chorus is where I wanted the message to come across the most as it was the main part of the song, this is the part of the song that I wanted people to remember with the flashing background and close ups of my actresses so that the focus is on her and nothing else, by doing this it will allow my audience to be able to connect to the song. The artist I chose will naturally help sales and simulate word-of-mouth, as she is of a very young age with such great talent. With my music video I will be displaying it on vimeo, this is a website where all music video can be published, it is a website where anyone can post their videos not just big music artists like Rhianna or Ellie Goulding but students can too. With publishing my music video on vimeo this is one way of measuring success as if people watch it will tell you how many people have viewed. This highlights success because the higher the numbers of views it has, the more people are watching it and telling other people about it. Furthermore the music video is my main product to attract my audience, whereas my album cover and poster promote it to bring it to people’s attention, they are selling the song and music video which is the ultimate goal for them.

Magazine Advert
The purpose of the magazine advert is literally to promote the album and contribute to the image and style of the artist I wish to create. I feel that magazine advert successfully represents this as I chose to have very bold colour such as black and red, I picked these colours as the album I am recreating it is called red. The colour red conotates that my actress has power and confidence, thus linking with lyrics represents that she has the upper hand in the relationship. This will appeal to my target audience as they will appreciate how bold and out there the colour is, pop genre is all about being out there. In terms of the image of my actress looking directly at the camera means that my audience will recognise my poster is representing my album. With my image on my magazine I used the same effect as what I used on my digipak as it kept the theme and house style, this displays that all of my images are all linked together. On my music advert I also have reviews from magazines and newspapers, this helps sell my album as it shows that other people have listened to it and reviewed it, this will persuade people to buy it even more because they want to see if it lives up to their 5 star rating. Not only having ratings on my magazine advert I also have where you can purchase the album/song, highlighting that is available for all kinds of people, not just to my target audience. My magazine advert is there to promote my music video, by having the rating on the front and very clear to the public eye is helping to make people want to watch my music video as they want to see what it is like and why they have given it a 5 star rating. This can highlight success because it will show that more people are seeing the poster around which will make the vimeo views go up. This is all linked to the music video because without all of the advertisement then the hits wouldn’t go up because no one will know about it to go and watch it.

Digipak
The purpose of the digipak is to attract my audience to want to listen to my CD, this means that I will have to make it look attractive and appealing for it to catch my audience’s eye. Within my digipak I continued using my house style. I kept the same red from what I was using on my magazine advert. With my images, to attract the audience I used a face on picture as the genre is pop on the front cover, this highlights that the whole album is about her and only about her. Not only did I use the same house colours I put the same effect on the pictures as I did on the magazine advert, this displays that everything is linked and to do with one product. The title of my album is ‘Red’ this signifies that she is strong and powering over the opposite sex reinforcing the message from the music video about being strong and happy about breaking up. With the other photos inside the album I used images that would relate to the music video, for example the image behind the actual CD is an image of a sparkler up close the camera, this relating to the video and reminding people of that specific part for them to remember. With my digipak I felt that featuring her in most of the photos will let my audience remember this album and be able to relate to her as I wanted my younger audience to feel comfortable whenever they saw images of her. With having such bright colours on both my magazine and digipak this is really helping with the promotion and selling of my music video which is what they are there to do. They make people interested to find out more about what is going on.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? FINAL EVALUATION

My music video we are never getting back together by Taylor swift is the genre of Pop. I have stuck to the typical conventions of this genre by making sure that all of my music video, digipak and magazine poster is based around her. I done this with my magazine advert by having the main image of her, with her looking directly down the camera to make sure that she caught my audience’s attention. With my digipak I also made sure that my actress (Greta Bruce) was in most images. The only image that she wasn’t in was the image behind the CD, this was a picture of a sparkler, this related to my sections of my music video.

Music video
The music video I created conforms to some of Andrew Goodwin's ideas on music videos, such as the fact that there is a link between the visuals and the lyrics. This is relevant to my product as I have created literal visual representations of the words in the song, for example with the lyrics ‘You go talk to your friends, talk to my friends, talk to me’ I have my actresses standing with her friends behind her doing actions to the song.

The song I chose “We are never getting back together” by Taylor Swift is of fast up beat tempo, therefore when editing my music video, I ensured to keep a fast pace , making sure the cuts of shots were on the beat, and didn’t contradict the melody of the song. However the song that I chose started off with a slow beat but as the song progressed as the tempo/beat got faster. As my beat got faster I made sure that my cuts got faster to make sure that they linked up with the song.

With representation I attempted to portray 2 contrasting situations.
The first situation that I portrayed is that my actresses over powered the male, I displayed this within my chorus’ of the song. With my chorus’ my actress was expressing that she doesn’t care about breaking up with him. She’s having fun being care free with her friends.

The second situation that I portrayed in my music videos is anger, this is highlighted in the verses. I displayed this in my verses by showing flash backs of the relationship that she had just ended. The flash backs consisted of her arguing with her ex and being stood up when they meant to go out.

My representation of power was displayed through performance, it means I could really get her feelings through her singing into the camera so it’s like my actresses is singing to her audience not to a camera. This way it allows my audience to connect with my actresses and be able to feel what she is feeling. My second representation was represented through narrative, this was displayed in my verses, and this means that you got to see what happened and how it affected her. One scene was a flashback to their favorite place but she ended up being on her own as he stood her up, this made my actress feel very alone. I close ups of her face when she was kissing the penny to throw it in the water so that my audience was able to really be able to see the emotion in her facial expressions.

I have followed the forms and conventions of a typical pop genre music video, I have made it fun and interesting to watch to keep my audience entertained and not bored. I focused the whole of my music video around my female actress.

I decided to stick with the forms and conventions of pop music videos as if I had done something different then it would have been hard to be able to relate to my audience and be able to understand why I have done it, also my song is aimed at young target audience so highlighting that it has to be suitable for them.

I have used a variety of shots within in my music video, for example close-ups, mid-shots and long shots, using all the different types of shots means that my audience is going to be able to connect well with my audience. Close up shots means that my audience will be able to connect and feel what my actresses is feeling, whereas long shots in my music video means that my audience will be able to see the surrounding and feel like they were there with her and engage in the song.

My focus on locations is what makes my music video so visually pleasing. I filmed in London as everyone knows the place so it will be easily recognised, therefore the locations within my video are easier for my audience to identify with. This is so I could ensure that my audience would feel a personal identification with my actress, helping them to feel more engaged with the narrative – which also means my video applies to Bulmer and Katz' Uses and Gratifications theory. With having a younger target audience using the scenes of London means that it’s not a place they wouldn’t have visited because this is a family place where people tend to go out for day trips to all the tourist spots. Within in my music video I used Trafalgar square which will a tourists spot with the fountains and the bug lion statue, I also used Tower Bridge which is a major tourist spot as most people have walked across it or seen it on the TV. This means that they will be able to relate to it themself and feel a part of the video.

Digipak
Equally the Digipak is just as important as it should reflect the artist’s personality and attitudes, therefore many close ups of the artist on the digipak is needed to highlight this. I have used close ups for the front page of the Digipak as this will attract the audiences eye straight away when walking past as they will be able identify who it is, this is also due to the consistency of colours used as they also follow the same colour scheme as the magazine advert. My digipak maintains pop genre style with the application of having a face on image as the front image, these are photos I took from a photoshoot using a black screen because I wanted to the effect of having a black background as when I edited the images it means that the background would have the effect as well.

The artist name is clearly written in underneath the album name in a hand written font to make it look like each album is personal to each owner as it looks like that Taylor swift herself has written her name herself. With the title ‘RED’ I wanted to make it bold and stand out so it would catch my audience eye because the song itself is very catchy and out there, so both my digipak and song had to link well together.

Whereas with my back image I decided to use a mid-shot so that audience was able to see her figure and how she works with the camera. However with all my images I made sure that I used the same effect to ensure that I kept the house style throughout. Also on the back of my digipak I made sure that stuck to the conventions as I added institution information, a barcode, listing of songs and the record labels logo.

Magazine Advert
Similarly to my music video, my magazine advert conforms to the conventions of real-media products in relation to the pop genre. The artists name is written clearly at top, ensuring to grasp the attention from the fans of Taylor swift. Her name is written in the same way it is on the Digipak – this creates a House Style and a common theme – so the artist’s products are easily identified each time. On magazine advert I featured 5 star ratings from ‘Q magazine’ and ‘the Guardian’ in order to give the album a feeling of success, which audience members will appreciate as they will know spending their money on this album will not be of waste. My main image on my magazine poster is of her as I want to stick to the main conventions of pop genre poster. I also added when it is going to be released and how it is going to be released because many people may want it on CD, whereas some other people will want in on vinyl or iTunes.

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages? FINAL EVALUTATION

When constructing my A2 music video coursework I used many technologies within my construction, research, planning and evaluation. All my work that I have done within all the tasks are being blogged. I have found this the hardest task as it was the first thing that we set up as we started the year. At first I found it hard to handle and work out how to use but after a while you get used to it. The blog has proved to be a great way to display multimedia skill, an easy place to access work from anywhere and visually more interesting than showcases from projects before. The advances and changes to the layout of blogger also causes many problems as it took a while for me to adjust to the new format, however once I was an accomplished user of the new layout, I believe that it was highly beneficial, time effective and efficient.

Due to the fact of expanding my work in A2 when using blogger you need to use different ways to publish your work. I started using YouTube to publish videos onto to my blog to make a change from using slideshare/issu, which is a programme you would use to publish word or PowerPoint documents. Not only did I use YouTube to upload production logs or planning/evaluation tasks I used it to upload drafts of music video and my final draft. I would often have to export my video using a different compressor in order to reduce file size so that I would not have to be waiting around for large amounts of time whilst the video uploaded, it still took a bit of time but even though I had to wait for the file to upload it didn’t stop me from carrying on with my work.

Other online forms include the essential ‘Prezi’ presentation-maker, you would use this programme to create a document with interactions to make it more interesting and keep people attracted to my blog and make sure that they don’t get bored or lose concentration. I used prezi’s in a number of different research tasks, such as influence in music styles, music genre and what is a digipak.

When shooting photos for my ancillary tasks I used a Cannon 550D. This camera was equipped with a cinematic shutter speed with a 1.8 aperture lens. This meant I could take photographs in shallow focus for a more creative and artistic look. When editing these images I would place them into Adobe Photoshop cs6.

Once placing my images in adobe Photoshop I would use the crop tool to make images the size I wanted for my digipak or magazine advert and the Magic Wand Tool is what assisted me in cutting out particular parts of an image in a professional manner. The Brush Tool also came in handy when making my magazine advert look more interesting, as it meant I could scroll through a selection of shapes and images and print them onto the background of my advert. I used the effects that we had in our media resources area to get a sepia look to make my photos fit in with my genre.

Once I had edited all of my photos I then created my actual digipak on a program called Adobe InDesign, I previously used this in AS, this meant that I had experience using the program and just needed to refresh my memory on how it works. I find that Adobe InDesign is a lot easier to use then Photoshop as you don’t have to everything on a different layer, not using layers is easier as previously when using Photoshop I forget to add new layers, so when I want to go and change something I cannot as I have something else on the same layer. When creating my digipak I sued a variety of tools. When adding my image I would place it and re-size to the sixe that it needed to be for me to work around it. With my image I would have it ‘at the back’ meaning that when I added text it would go in front of the image instead of behind. A few times when I added text it would go behind the image, when this happened I would have to left click on the image, go to arrange then send back. Another tool that I used within Adobe InDesign is the transparency tool for my image that goes behind the actual CD. This tool is found on the tool bar at the top of the program, you can choose how transparent you want the image to be.

When filming my actual music video I used the same camera as I did to take the pictures with, which is a Cannon 550D, so that my footage was steady I always filmed with a tripod so that the camera didn’t shake or move. This would give me a more professional look to my footage.

When shooting in Green screen I used florescent strip Lights. This allowed me to brighten up my actress so that the focus was on her. Not only did it help me brighten up my actresses it helped me to be able to use adobe premiere to cut my actress out of the green screen. When cutting out my actresses I used the keying tool. The keying tool allowed me to select the green and ‘delete’ the background so that I could add my own effect. Also when using the strip lights , it took away shadows from behind my actress, this helped a lot when I was using the ultra key tool in Adobe premiere to cut my footage as it made I could do it all in one simple set with adjusting the levels of contrast and brightness. I had to learn this new skill of being able to use Adobe premiere but once I got the hang of it you understand what all the tools to and how it works, it takes time and you get stressed but it’s simple once you know how it works.

Once I had uploaded all of my footage into Adobe premiere CS6 I used the razor tool so that I was able to cut my clips at the right place so that it linked up with my lyrics and the lip syncing was perfect. This tool became very useful as it was used at all times, this was the main tool that was being used during the time of creating my music video. To help me figure out when I need to cut my footage I could listen to the beat of the music and click ‘m’ when the beat was changing. This would leave a red mark at the top if the timeline, it allowed me to know where the beat changed and how often I needed to change my clip so I wouldn’t have the same clip running for too long of a time. Another tool that I used when creating my music video in Adobe Premiere was the black and white tool, if I wanted a certain part of my music video in black all I would have to do is search for the tool the drag it on top of my certain clip and it would change to black and white, I could then adjust the contrast and brightness.

Not only did I used the lights when filming my green screen, I used lights when filming my outside footage. While filming outside I used different lights to when I was filming my greens screen this time I used Red head lights, these lights are brighter and more effective for outside filming as they are more likely to be able to light up a wider space where as the florescent strip lights can’t. With Red head lights you have to position them in the correct place for you to be able to still see you actor. With filming outside I had to place the Red head light far away when filming because when the light was closer you couldn’t see any of the people in the view of the camera.

Media technologies were also important in the evaluation stage of my coursework, I used Microsoft word to draft all of my questions before I chose how I was going to present them as I wanted to make them interesting and pleasing for people to watch. A great way of presenting your work in an interesting way is to create a video on Adobe premiere. This way I will be able to record my voice and all images and clips within a clip to make sure that whoever is watching my evaluations will stay interested.

What have you learned from your audience feedback? FINAL EVALUATION

Audience feedback is vital process when conducting my music video as it allowed me to find out what was going well with my work and how I could improve. It ensured that I produced a high quality music video that will appeal to my target audience.

My primary target audience is females between the ages of 13-24. My primary demographic is BC1 And C2, I feel that this is an appropriate demographic as it is mainly middleclass, lower middles class and skilled working class that will be interested in listening to pop genre music. I think that it would be unlikely for demographic A (higher middle class) such as a lawyer or accountant to be interested in pop music as in the pop industry people are interested in having a laugh with their friends out in social aspects. People of a demographic of BC1 and C2 are seriously stereotyped especially C2 to go out and have fun with their friends and drink is a social aspect. This makes them appropriate to my target audience as this is what pop genre is all about, it’s about having fun.

I also have a secondary target audience, which consist of females and males aged under 13 and over 24 years old. The demographic of target audience would be D and E, this again is down to the stereotypes of pop genre, and it is targeted at anyone who likes it as it is such easy going music. I chose my primary target audience on the base of my music video song ‘we are never getting back together by Taylor swift’ as it is about a girl breaking up from a relationship, this would be targeted more at the younger generation as they could relate it to their ‘first love’.

To collect my audience feedback I used many different techniques along the way, one of the ways that I chose to collect this information is that I presented my music videos to my class mates then allowed them to give me feedback on what went well and improvements that could be made. One of the improvements that were given was lighting in some of my shots as with my green screen the lighting is very bright and clear whereas shots in my house were very soft. To sort this problem out I will need to colour correct shots and brighten them up in Adobe Premiere. Another improvement is that some or my shots are long and they need to be cut down for a better effect.Things that went well that my audience feedback said was my green screening. They said that I done it well as I done it in the right way to attract my audience and to catch their eye.

Not only did I ask them to give me feedback I asked them to give me a level from 1-4 on how professional they thought it was. I feel that this kind of audience feedback was effective because it allowed me to view everyone’s opinions and what they actually thought about on paper. Having the information on paper meant that I would be able to go back to it at any time and make sure that I made to corrections that they think would make my music video better and more professional. With the questions that I asked I used open and closed questions to get a variety of different answers, meaning I could get one word answers which is Quantative data and then long descriptive answers which is qualitative data.

Knowing that my music video was going to be seen by anyone on YouTube and vimeo did mean that I was going approach my video in a different way, I wanted to make sure that what I created was something people wanted to see. To find out what people wanted to see is I went and asked people what kind of things that they enjoyed and like, this helped me decide on what I was going to add to my music video.

Furthermore, not only did I get audience feedback from my classmates I got feedback from various media teaches, students outside of school and adults. Most of the audience feedback that I got was from my target audience but I also collected audience feedback from people who weren’t, as this meant I could see if it appealed to them too meaning that I could bring my target audience to a wider age spread. The information that I got from people that were not my target audience is that they enjoyed the music video but said it was targeted more at the younger generation as it was a young breakup. To a certain extent I agree with this as it was my aim to target the younger generation as I feel that they will be able to relate to this more than people over the age of 24, as people between the age of 13-24 is when most girls discover their first break up.

Once I had done my first drafts for all three products (music video, magazine advert and digipak) I asked people on Facebook to message me their views. This is where I gathered very important information about my house style, as many people asked to see my images linked together from all my digipak photos and the photos on my poster. Taking this into account, I interpreted a theme within all of my images, I done this by adding the same effect to all my images to make sure that they all look linked together. I couldn’t help but think that some people might not be the target audience of my products. This forced me to believe that receiving feedback in this way was not entirely effective, as some views and opinions were posted by people who were not in fact my actual target audience, therefore confusing my decisions.

All the feedback that I have gained from my audience has seen to be very effective as it has allowed me to make improvements on my music video to make it look more professional and keep my audience’s attention for the whole duration of the song. With the improvements given I acted upon them by brightening some parts of my video on premiere, also I re-filmed a few bits to make them look more effective and mix up the clips a bit.
